Ibn Abbas said: I spent a night at the house of my maternal aunt Maymunah, where the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was staying. The Messenger of God spoke with his family for a while, then slept. During the last third of the night, or part of it, he sat up, looked at the sky, and recited: Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of night and day are signs for people of understanding. He continued to the end of the surah. Then he went to the water skin, loosened its tie, and poured water into a basin. He performed ablution well, without excess and without falling short. Then he stood and prayed. I got up, performed ablution, and stood to his left. He took me by the ear and moved me around to his right, and his prayer totaled thirteen rakahs. Then he lay down and slept until he snored; whenever he slept, he snored. Bilal announced the prayer to him, and he prayed without performing ablution again.

Among his supplications were: O God, place light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light to my right, light to my left, light above me, light below me, light before me, light behind me, and grant me light. Some added: and light in my tongue. It is also reported: and my nerves, my flesh, my blood, my hair, and my skin. In a version transmitted by al-Bukhari and Muslim, he said: Place light in my soul and increase my light. In another version transmitted by Muslim, he said: O God, grant me light.
