ʿUrwa ibn al-Mughīra ibn Shuʿba reported from his father, al-Mughīra, who said: ‘I went on the expedition to Tabūk with the Messenger of Allah. Before dawn, he went to relieve himself in a low-lying place, and I carried a small waterskin with me. When he returned, I began pouring water from it over his hands. He washed his palms and face. He wore a woolen cloak and tried to uncover his forearms, but its sleeves were too tight. He brought his hands out from beneath the cloak, draped it over his shoulders, washed his forearms, and wiped over his forelock, turban, and khuffs. Then he mounted, and I mounted with him. We reached the people, who had begun praying with ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn ʿAwf leading them; he had already led one rakʿah. When he sensed the Prophet’s arrival, he started to step back, but the Prophet gestured for him to continue and prayed with them. When the prayer ended, the Prophet stood, and I stood with him, and we performed the rakʿah that we had missed.’ Muslim transmitted it.
