Mishkat al-Masabih 2345
وَعَنْ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ عَسَّالٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى جَعَلَ بِالْمَغْرِبِ بَابًا عَرْضُهُ مَسِيرَةُ سَبْعِينَ عَامًا لِلتَّوْبَةِ لَا يُغْلَقُ مَا لم تطلع عَلَيْهِ الشَّمْسُ مِنْ قِبَلِهِ وَذَلِكَ قَوْلُ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ: (يَوْمَ يَأْتِي بَعْضُ آيَاتِ رَبِّكَ لَا يَنْفَعُ نَفْسًا إِيمَانُهَا لَمْ تَكُنْ آمَنَتْ مِنْ قبل) رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيّ وَابْن مَاجَه
Safwan ibn ‘Assal (may God be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: ‘God Most High has placed in the west a gate for repentance, whose width is a journey of seventy years. It will not close until the sun rises from that direction.’ That is the word of God, Mighty and Majestic: ‘On the day when some of your Lord’s signs come, a soul’s faith will not benefit it if it had not believed before.’ Al-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmitted it. The Arabic source marks it as not studied by al-Albani.
