‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Abbas reported that the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: ‘The dead person in the grave is like a drowning person crying for help, waiting for a supplication to reach him from a father, mother, brother, or friend. When it reaches him, it is dearer to him than the world and all it contains. God Most High grants the people of the graves mountains’ worth of benefit from the supplications of the people on earth. The gift of the living to the dead is seeking forgiveness for them.’ Al-Bayhaqi transmitted it in Shu‘ab al-Iman. The Arabic source marks it as not studied by al-Albani.
