Translation
Abu Qatada reported God’s messenger as saying

"A good vision comes from God and a dream (hulm) from the devil. So when one of you sees what he likes he must tell it only to one whom he likes; but when he sees What he dislikes he must seek refuge in God from its evil and from the evil of the devil, spit on his left three times, and not tell anyone of it. It will then not harm him.” (Bukhari and Muslim.)

The Nature of Visions

This noble hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim distinguishes between two types of nocturnal experiences: "ru'ya" (good vision) which is from Allah's mercy, and "hulm" (bad dream) which originates from Satan's whispers.

The Prophet ﷺ establishes that true visions are among the forty-six parts of prophethood, serving as divine communications to believers. These are distinct from ordinary dreams arising from psychological states or satanic interference.

Proper Conduct for Good Visions

When one experiences a pleasing vision, they should share it only with those who love them and possess sound understanding. This prevents envy (hasad) and preserves the vision's blessing.

Scholars recommend sharing with knowledgeable individuals who can offer proper interpretation, as the Prophet ﷺ said: "The vision rests on the interpretation given to it." Disclosure to fools or enemies may distort its meaning and nullify its benefit.

Remedial Actions for Disturbing Dreams

Upon experiencing unpleasant dreams, one must immediately seek refuge in Allah from Satan's evil. The prescribed actions include: spitting lightly three times to one's left (where Satan typically approaches), turning over to the other side, and performing prayer if awake.

Most importantly, one must never relate the bad dream to anyone. Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani explains that narration gives reality to Satan's deception. By following these prescriptions, the dream's potential harm is nullified by Allah's permission.

Spiritual Significance

This teaching emphasizes the believer's constant need for Allah's protection and the importance of proper adab (etiquette) in spiritual matters. It trains Muslims to attribute good to Allah and seek refuge from evil.

The different treatments for good and bad visions reflect Islamic psychology's sophistication - encouraging gratitude for blessings while providing practical spiritual remedies against distress.
