Translation
Abdullah b. Mas'ud reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said

There is none amongst you with whom is not an attache from amongst the jinn (devil). They (the Companions) said: Allah's Messenger, with you too? Thereupon he said: Yes, but Allah helps me against him and so I am safe from his hand and he does not command me but for good.

Hadith Commentary

This profound narration from Sahih Muslim 2814a reveals the reality that every human being is accompanied by a qarīn (constant companion) from the jinn who whispers evil suggestions. The Prophet's ﷺ affirmation that even he had such a companion demonstrates this as a universal human condition, not a reflection of personal spiritual deficiency.

Divine Protection & Spiritual Struggle

The crucial distinction lies in the Prophet's ﷺ statement: "Allah helps me against him." This illustrates that while the whisperer's presence is inevitable, divine assistance enables the believer to resist its influence. The scholar Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani explains that this help manifests through increased faith, knowledge, and constant remembrance of Allah.

The remarkable conclusion "he does not command me but for good" indicates that through divine protection, what was meant as evil whispering becomes a catalyst for spiritual vigilance, causing the believer to seek refuge in Allah and thereby increasing their reward.

Practical Implications for Believers

This teaching offers profound comfort - the presence of whispering thoughts does not indicate failure in faith. Rather, the test lies in one's response. The scholars emphasize that resisting these whispers brings greater reward than if they never occurred.

The solution lies in following the Prophet's example: seeking Allah's help through sincere du'a, strengthening one's faith through worship and knowledge, and recognizing that these whispers are external to one's essential nature and can be overcome through divine assistance.
