Translation
This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Abdullah b. Mas'ud (who said)

We were along with Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) at Mina, that moon was split up into two. One of its parts was behind the mountain and the other one was on this side of the mountain. Allah's Messenger (may peace be upbn him) said to us: Bear witness to this.

The Splitting of the Moon

This narration from Sahih Muslim 2800 b describes one of the great miracles bestowed upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as a sign of his prophethood. The splitting of the moon occurred in response to the disbelievers' demand for a miraculous sign, demonstrating divine power and authenticating the Messenger's truthfulness.

Scholarly Commentary

This event is among the clear proofs (bayyinat) mentioned in the Quran: "The Hour has come near, and the moon has split" (54:1). The command "Bear witness to this" indicates the importance of testifying to this miracle for future generations.

The splitting was physical and visible to all present, with one portion appearing on each side of the mountain. This was not an eclipse or optical illusion but an actual division of the celestial body by Allah's permission.

Significance and Lessons

This miracle serves as eternal evidence for the truth of Islam and the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him). It demonstrates that Allah's power transcends all natural laws and that He supports His messengers with clear signs.

The event calls believers to reflect on Allah's majesty and strengthens faith in the unseen. It also reminds us that despite witnessing clear signs, those whose hearts are sealed may still reject truth, as did the disbelievers of Quraysh who attributed the miracle to magic.
