Commentary on the Prohibition of Isbāl

This noble hadith from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) addresses the grave sin of isbāl - the practice of intentionally lengthening one's garment below the ankles out of arrogance and pride. The divine threat contained herein is severe and profound, indicating that such behavior incurs Allah's displeasure to the extent that He will not look upon such a person with mercy on the Day of Judgment.

The scholars have explained that this prohibition applies specifically to men, as women are permitted to lengthen their garments for modesty. The core issue is the intention of pride and arrogance (kibr), which is among the most destructive spiritual diseases. Imam Nawawi comments that this applies whether the garment is a thawb, izār, or any other clothing that covers the lower body.

The phrase "Allah will not look upon him" signifies complete deprivation of divine mercy and compassion. Some scholars interpret this as meaning such a person will not be granted the ultimate blessing of seeing Allah's Noble Countenance in Paradise, while others explain it as Allah withholding His special gaze of mercy and acceptance.

This hadith serves as a powerful reminder that outward appearance reflects inward spiritual states, and that Muslims must maintain humility in both dress and demeanor, avoiding anything that indicates arrogance or superiority over others.
