The good vision are from Allah and the evil dreams are from the satan. If one sees a dream which one does not like, one should spit on one's left side and seek the refuge of Allah from the satan; it will not do one any harm, and one should not disclose it to anyone and if one sees a good vision one should feel pleased but should not disclose it to anyone but whom one loves.
The Book of Dreams - Sahih Muslim 2261f
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon His final Messenger Muhammad.
Classification of Dreams
The noble hadith establishes three categories of dreams: true visions from Allah, disturbing dreams from Satan, and dreams arising from one's own thoughts. True visions constitute one of the forty-six parts of prophethood, as established in authentic traditions.
Good visions serve as glad tidings from the Most Merciful, while evil dreams are whisperings from the accursed Satan, meant to cause distress and fear in the believer's heart.
Etiquette for Bad Dreams
When experiencing a disturbing dream, one should spit lightly to one's left side three times, as spitting symbolizes rejection and contempt for Satan's deception.
One must seek refuge in Allah from Satan's evil by reciting: "A'ūdhu billāhi minash-shaytānir-rajīm" (I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed). This act of seeking divine protection nullifies the dream's potential harm.
The prohibition against disclosing bad dreams prevents Satan from using the narration to further distress the dreamer or listeners. Silence here is a form of spiritual protection.
Etiquette for Good Dreams
When blessed with a good vision, one should praise Allah and feel happiness, recognizing it as divine mercy. However, discretion in sharing is paramount.
Such visions should only be shared with those known for their wisdom, love, and religious understanding - not with envious or ignorant people who might misinterpret or diminish the blessing.
Spiritual Wisdom
This teaching demonstrates Islam's comprehensive guidance, covering even our sleeping state. It teaches us to attribute good to Allah and recognize evil's source in Satan.
The prescribed actions transform potential distress into acts of worship, turning moments of fear into opportunities for seeking divine protection and maintaining spiritual equilibrium.
May Allah grant us true visions and protect us from Satan's whisperings. And Allah knows best.
