Shaddid b. Aus said

Two are the things which I remember Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) having said: Verily Allah has enjoined goodness to everything; so when you kill, kill in a good way and when you slaughter, slaughter in a good way. So every one of you should sharpen his knife, and let the slaughtered animal die comfortably.

The Book of Hunting, Slaughter, and what may be Eaten - Sahih Muslim 1955a

This noble hadith from Sahih Muslim contains profound guidance regarding the treatment of animals and the spiritual etiquette of slaughter. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasizes that divine mercy encompasses all creation.

Comprehensive Excellence (Ihsān)

"Verily Allah has enjoined goodness to everything" establishes the universal principle of ihsān - performing actions with excellence and beauty. This extends beyond human interactions to include all living creatures.

The scholars explain that ihsān in this context means performing every action in the best possible manner, with proper intention and attention to detail, recognizing that Allah watches over all affairs.

Ethical Killing and Slaughter

"When you kill, kill in a good way" refers to situations where killing becomes necessary, such as in lawful warfare or eliminating harmful creatures. Even then, Muslims must avoid torture, mutilation, or excessive force.

"When you slaughter, slaughter in a good way" specifically addresses the ritual slaughter of animals for food. This requires using a sharp instrument and cutting the throat, esophagus, and jugular veins swiftly.

Practical Implementation

"Sharpen his knife" ensures the blade is extremely sharp to minimize the animal's suffering. A dull knife causes unnecessary pain and violates the principle of mercy.

"Let the slaughtered animal die comfortably" means the animal should not see the knife being sharpened, should not be slaughtered in front of other animals, and should be handled gently throughout the process.

Spiritual Dimensions

Classical commentators note that this hadith connects outward action with inward intention. The physical act of proper slaughter reflects spiritual consciousness and remembrance of Allah.

The repetition of "good way" emphasizes that the means are as important as the ends in Islamic law. How we accomplish something matters as much as what we accomplish.
