The Book of Jihad and Expeditions

Abu Amir Abd Allah ibn Barrad al-Ashari and Muhammad ibn al-Ala al-Hamdani narrated to us—and the wording is that of Abu Amir. They both said: Abu Usamah narrated to us, from Burayd ibn Abi Burdah, from Abu Burdah, from Abu Musa, who said: We set out on an expedition with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), six of us with one camel that we took turns riding. Our feet became sore, and my feet became sore and my toenails fell off. We wrapped rags around our feet. The expedition was therefore called Dhat al-Riqa, because of the rags we wrapped around our feet. Abu Burdah said: Abu Musa related this report, then disliked doing so. It seemed he disliked that something of his deeds had been disclosed. Abu Usamah said: Someone other than Burayd added to what he related: May Allah reward him for it.

Zuhayr ibn Harb narrated to me: Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us, from Malik. And Abu al-Tahir narrated this to me—and the wording is his—saying: Abd Allah ibn Wahb narrated to me, from Malik ibn Anas, from al-Fudayl ibn Abi Abd Allah, from Abd Allah ibn Niyar al-Aslami, from Urwah ibn al-Zubayr, from Aishah, the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ), who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) set out toward Badr. When he was at Harrat al-Wabarah, a man known for courage and bravery caught up with him. The companions of the Messenger of Allah were pleased when they saw him. When he reached him, the man said to the Messenger of Allah: I have come to follow you and take part alongside you. The Messenger of Allah asked him: Do you believe in Allah and His Messenger? He said no. He said: Then go back, for I will not seek help from a polytheist. Aishah said: He continued until we were at the tree, and the man caught up with him. He said to him what he had said the first time, and the Prophet said to him what he had said the first time: Go back, for I will not seek help from a polytheist. The man then went back and caught up with him at al-Bayda. He said to him what he had said the first time: Do you believe in Allah and His Messenger? He said yes. The Messenger of Allah then said to him: Come along.
