The Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer

Amr al-Naqid and Zuhayr ibn Harb narrated to me; they said: Ya‘qub ibn Ibrahim ibn Sa‘d narrated to us. He said: My father narrated to us, from Salih, from Ibn Shihab, who said: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed me that Aisha said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking refuge in his prayer from the trial of the Dajjal.

Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq narrated to me: Abu al-Yaman informed us: Shu‘ayb informed us, from al-Zuhri, who said: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed me that Aisha, the Prophet’s wife, told him that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate in prayer: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave. I seek refuge in You from the trial of the False Messiah, the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt.” She said: Someone asked him, “Messenger of Allah, why do you so often seek refuge from debt?” He replied, “When a person incurs debt, he speaks and lies, and makes a promise and breaks it.”

Qutaybah ibn Sa‘id narrated to us, from Malik ibn Anas—while it was being read to him—from Abu al-Zubayr, from Tawus, from Ibn Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach them this supplication just as he taught them a surah of the Qur’an. He would say: “Say: O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, and I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of the False Messiah, the Dajjal, and from the trials of life and death.” Muslim ibn al-Hajjaj said: It has reached me that Tawus said to his son, “Did you make this supplication in your prayer?” He said, “No.” Tawus said, “Repeat your prayer,” because Tawus narrated it from three or four people—or so he said.

Dawud ibn Rushayd narrated to us: al-Walid narrated to us, from al-Awza‘i, from Abu Ammar—whose name was Shaddad ibn Abdullah—from Abu Asma, from Thawban, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) finished his prayer, he asked forgiveness three times and said, “O Allah, You are Peace, and from You is peace. Blessed are You, Possessor of Majesty and Honor.” Al-Walid said: I asked al-Awza‘i, “How does one ask forgiveness?” He replied, “Say: I ask Allah for forgiveness; I ask Allah for forgiveness.”
