The Book of Mosques and Places of Prayer

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shayba reported to us: Ibn Numayr, Hafs, and Waki' reported to us, from Hisham, from his father, from A'isha, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with a report like the hadith of Ibn Uyayna, from al-Zuhri, from Anas.

Zuhayr ibn Harb reported to me: Isma'il—meaning Ibn Ulayya—reported to us, from Abd al-Aziz—namely, Ibn Suhayb—who said: Anas was asked about garlic. He said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Whoever eats from this plant should not come near us or pray with us.'

Muhammad ibn Rafi and Abd ibn Humayd reported to me. Abd said: Abd al-Razzaq informed us; Ibn Rafi said: Abd al-Razzaq reported to us: Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri, from Ibn al-Musayyab, from Abu Hurayra, who said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'Whoever eats from this plant must not come near our mosque or harm us with the odor of garlic.'

Amr al-Naqid reported to me: Isma'il Ibn Ulayya reported to us, from al-Jurayri, from Abu Nadra, from Abu Sa'id, who said: We had only just conquered Khaybar when we, the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), came upon this plant—garlic. The people were hungry, so we ate a great deal of it. Then we went to the mosque, and the Messenger of Allah detected its smell. He said, 'Whoever has eaten any of this foul-smelling plant must not come near us in the mosque.' The people said, 'It has been forbidden! It has been forbidden!' This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said, 'People, I do not have the authority to forbid what Allah has made lawful to me. It is a plant whose smell I dislike.'

Harun ibn Sa'id al-Ayli and Ahmad ibn Isa reported to us: Ibn Wahb reported to us: Amr informed me, from Bukayr ibn al-Ashajj, from Ibn Khabbab, from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companions passed by an onion field. Some of them dismounted and ate from it, while others did not. We went to him, and he summoned those who had not eaten onions, while making the others wait until the smell had gone away.
