Exhort to recite" There is no god but Allah" to those of you who are dying.
The Book of Prayer - Funerals
Sahih Muslim 916 a
Exposition of the Hadith
This noble instruction from the Prophet (peace be upon him) carries profound wisdom. The final words uttered by a believer at the moment of death hold immense significance, for they may determine one's eternal abode. The testimony "Lā ilāha illallāh" (There is no god but Allah) is the foundation of faith and the key to Paradise.
Scholars explain that reminding the dying person of this kalimah serves multiple purposes: it strengthens their faith at this critical juncture, helps them depart this world with the best possible statement, and serves as a means of divine mercy. The dying person's heart may be distracted by pain or worldly attachments, thus the reminder assists them in focusing on their ultimate purpose.
Method of Reminding
The reminder should be given gently and respectfully, not forcefully or excessively. One may recite the shahādah near the dying person, encouraging them to repeat it without causing distress. The tone should be soft and comforting, reminding them of Allah's mercy and the excellence of this testimony.
It is recommended that those present avoid unnecessary conversation and worldly discussions near the dying, instead focusing on reminders of the Hereafter and words that strengthen faith. The Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasized this practice as it encapsulates the entire message of Islam at life's most crucial transition.
