Hadith Text
When the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) died, he was covered with a Yamani wrapper.
Commentary
This narration from Sahih Muslim informs us that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was shrouded in a Hibarah garment—a type of striped cloth from Yemen. This practice establishes the Sunnah of using available, simple cloth for the kafan (shroud), without extravagance. The scholars derive from this that the shroud should be modest, covering the entire body, and that a single piece of cloth suffices if it is adequate. It also demonstrates the companions' adherence to the Prophet's teachings even in his passing, handling his blessed body with the utmost respect and following established Islamic funeral rites.
