Hadith Text

Jabir b. Samura reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) observed (Nafl) prayer sitting before his death.

This narration demonstrates the permissibility of performing voluntary (nafl) prayers while sitting, even when one has the physical capability to stand. The Prophet's (ﷺ) action in his final days establishes that sitting for optional prayers is a valid concession, particularly for those experiencing weakness or illness.

Classical scholars like Imam Nawawi explains that while standing remains superior for obligatory prayers when possible, one may sit for supererogatory prayers without diminishing the reward.
