Hadith Text
'A'isha reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to offer prayer at night while she lay in front of him, and when the Witr prayer was yet to be observed, he would awaken her and she observed Witr.
Commentary
This noble hadith demonstrates several important principles of Islamic jurisprudence. Firstly, it shows the permissibility of praying voluntary night prayers (Tahajjud) while one's wife is sleeping nearby in the same direction, as her presence does not invalidate the prayer. Secondly, it illustrates the Prophet's gentle manner in encouraging his family to perform acts of worship, awakening 'A'isha for Witr prayer with kindness. Thirdly, it establishes that Witr prayer is the concluding prayer of the night and should be performed last. The Prophet's practice of praying while 'A'isha lay between him and the qibla indicates that a barrier or person in front does not nullify the prayer if the essential conditions are met. This reflects the ease and practicality of the Shari'ah in accommodating normal household arrangements while maintaining devotion.
Juridical Rulings
1. Permissibility of praying with a person or object between the worshipper and qibla
2. Recommendation to perform Witr as the final night prayer
3. Encouragement for family members to pray together when possible
4. Demonstration of marital harmony in religious observance
5. Validity of voluntary night prayers in various household situations
