Hadith Commentary

This noble hadith establishes the immense virtue of performing the night prayer (Tahajjud/Qiyam al-Layl) during the blessed month of Ramadan. The phrase "because of faith" (imanan) indicates that this act must be performed with sincere belief in its obligation and virtue as ordained by Allah. The phrase "seeking his reward from Allah" (ihtisaban) signifies the purity of intention, performing the prayer solely for the Divine Countenance, not for ostentation or worldly gain.

The promise "his previous sins would be forgiven" refers specifically to minor sins, as major sins require genuine repentance (tawbah). This forgiveness is a manifestation of Allah's immense mercy during Ramadan, a month when the gates of Paradise are opened and the gates of Hellfire are closed. The night prayer in Ramadan, which includes the Tarawih prayers, is particularly esteemed as the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) encouraged it without making it obligatory, indicating its high recommended status (sunnah mu'akkadah).

Scholars explain that this forgiveness is attained through the combination of faith, righteous action, and the sanctity of the time - the nights of Ramadan. This demonstrates that acts of worship are magnified in their reward when performed in virtuous times, and that consistent night prayer during this month serves as spiritual purification, preparing the believer for continued obedience beyond Ramadan.
