Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: When a bondsman-a Muslim or a believer-washes his face (in course of ablution), every sin he contemplated with his eyes, will be washed away from his face along with water, or with the last drop of water; when he washes his hands, every sin they wrought will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin towards which his feet have walked will be washed away with the water or with the last drop of water with the result that he comes out pure from all sins.
The Book of Purification - Sahih Muslim 244
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: When a bondsman-a Muslim or a believer-washes his face (in course of ablution), every sin he contemplated with his eyes, will be washed away from his face along with water, or with the last drop of water; when he washes his hands, every sin they wrought will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin towards which his feet have walked will be washed away with the water or with the last drop of water with the result that he comes out pure from all sins.
Commentary on the Spiritual Purification
This noble hadith reveals that ablution (wudu) encompasses both physical and spiritual purification. The washing of limbs not only cleanses physical impurities but also removes spiritual stains caused by sins committed through these organs.
The specification of "Muslim or believer" indicates this blessing applies to those who perform ablution with faith and sincerity, recognizing it as an act of worship ordained by Allah.
Purification of Specific Organs
The face washing removes sins contemplated by the eyes - this includes unlawful gazes, looking at forbidden things, or failing to lower one's gaze when required.
The hand washing effaces sins committed through actions - such as theft, striking unjustly, writing falsehood, or other wrongful deeds performed by the hands.
The foot washing cleanses sins of walking toward disobedience - such as proceeding to places of sin, gatherings of backbiting, or any path leading to Allah's displeasure.
Divine Mercy and Completion
The repetition of "with the last drop of water" emphasizes Allah's comprehensive mercy, ensuring complete forgiveness even if the water barely reaches the required parts.
The concluding phrase "he comes out pure from all sins" demonstrates the perfection of Allah's forgiveness when His servant fulfills the prescribed acts of worship with proper intention and adherence to the Sunnah.
