The Book of Purification - Sahih Muslim 257b

This hadith enumerates five acts that constitute the natural disposition (fitra) upon which Allah created mankind. These practices maintain physical cleanliness and spiritual purity in accordance with Islamic teachings.

Commentary on the Acts of Fitra

Circumcision (Khitan): This is a sunnah of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and serves both hygienic and religious purposes. It facilitates purification from ritual impurities and represents submission to Allah's command.

Removing Pubic Hair: This maintains bodily cleanliness and prevents accumulation of impurities. Scholars recommend removal at least every forty days to uphold proper hygiene.

Clipping the Moustache: The Prophet (PBUH) instructed to trim the moustache generously, distinguishing Muslims from other nations. This practice prevents food particles from accumulating and maintains neat appearance.

Cutting Nails: Regular trimming prevents dirt accumulation and potential contamination. It is recommended to begin with the right hand, then left, and similarly for feet.

Plucking Underarm Hair: This removes sources of unpleasant odor and maintains personal hygiene. Like pubic hair, it should be removed regularly to uphold cleanliness standards.

Scholarly Perspectives

The majority of scholars consider these acts as emphasized sunnah (sunnah mu'akkadah). Some jurists regard circumcision as obligatory for males. These practices collectively represent the innate human disposition toward cleanliness and refinement as intended by Allah.

The recommended sequence when performing multiple acts of fitra is: clipping moustache, plucking underarm hair, trimming nails, then shaving pubic hair. However, performing them in any order remains valid.
