The Book of Virtues

Wathila ibn al-Asqa reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: Allah chose Kinana from among the descendants of Ismail, chose Quraysh from among Kinana, chose Banu Hashim from among Quraysh, and chose me from Banu Hashim.

Jabir ibn Samura reported that the Messenger of Allah said: I know a stone in Mecca that used to greet me before I was sent as a prophet. I still know it now.

Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah said: On the Day of Resurrection, I will be the foremost of the children of Adam, the first whose grave opens, the first to intercede, and the first whose intercession is accepted.

Jabir reported that Umm Malik used to send the Prophet a small leather container of clarified butter. Her sons would come asking for something to eat with their bread when they had nothing else. She would go to the container in which she had sent the butter to the Prophet and find butter in it. It continued to provide relish for her household until she squeezed it out. She then came to the Prophet, who asked: Did you squeeze it? She said: Yes. He said: If you had left it, it would have kept providing for you.

Jabir reported that a man came to the Prophet asking for food. He gave him half a wasq of barley. The man, his wife, and their guests continued eating from it until he weighed it. He came to the Prophet, who said: Had you not weighed it, you would have kept eating from it, and it would have remained for you.

Abu Musa reported that the Prophet said: The guidance and knowledge with which Allah, Mighty and Glorious, sent me are like abundant rain falling on the land. Some of the land is fertile: it receives the water and grows abundant plants and grass. Some of it is rocky ground that holds water, from which Allah benefits people: they drink from it, water their animals, and graze them. Another part is barren plain that neither holds water nor grows vegetation. This is like someone who gains understanding of the religion of Allah and benefits from what Allah sent me with, learning it and teaching it; and like someone who pays no attention to it and does not accept the guidance of Allah with which I was sent.

Abu Musa reported that the Prophet said: My example and the message with which Allah sent me are like a man who came to his people and said: My people, I have seen the army with my own eyes. I am a naked warner, so flee at once! A group of his people believed and left during the night, setting off calmly. Another group rejected him and stayed where they were. By morning the army had arrived, destroyed them, and swept them away. Such is the example of those who obey me and follow what I have brought, and those who disobey me and reject the truth I have brought.
