Ibn 'Abbas reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was the most generous of people in charity, but he was generous to the utmost in the month of Ramadan. Gabriel (peace be upon him) would meet him every year during the month of Ramadin until it ended, and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) recited to him the Qur'an; and when Gabriel met him Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) was most generous in giving charity like the blowing wind.
The Book of Virtues - Sahih Muslim 2308 a
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This noble hadith from Sahih Muslim, transmitted through the esteemed companion Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), illuminates the exceptional character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and the special virtues of Ramadan.
The Prophet's Generosity
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was inherently the most generous of mankind, demonstrating that true generosity stems from iman (faith). His natural disposition inclined toward giving, reflecting the divine attribute of the Most Generous (Al-Karīm).
The comparison to "the blowing wind" signifies several profound meanings: the wind's constancy, its widespread benefit reaching all in its path, the ease and naturalness of his giving, and the refreshing spiritual effect his charity had upon recipients.
Ramadan's Spiritual Elevation
The Prophet's generosity intensified during Ramadan because this blessed month combines multiple spiritual catalysts: the revelation of the Qur'an, the presence of the angel Gabriel for mutual Qur'anic review (mudārasa), and the multiplied rewards for righteous deeds.
The annual meeting with Gabriel (peace be upon him) for Qur'anic recitation indicates the special connection between Ramadan and the Divine Revelation. This spiritual companionship elevated the Prophet's state to unprecedented levels of benevolence.
Practical Lessons for the Ummah
This hadith teaches us to increase all forms of charity during Ramadan - not merely financial, but also through kind words, beneficial knowledge, and good deeds. The believer should emulate the Prophet's example by making their generosity comprehensive and effortless.
The integration of Qur'anic recitation with increased charity demonstrates that true interaction with Allah's Book naturally manifests in compassion toward His creation. The spiritual nourishment of Ramadan should translate into tangible benefit for the community.
