Translation
Mahmud b. Labid reported that 'Uthman b. 'Affan decided to rebuild the mosque (of Allah's Apostle in Medina) but the people did not like this idea and they wished that it should be preserved in the same (old) form. Thereupon he (Hadrat 'Uthman) said

I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who builds a mosque for Allah, Allah would build for him (a house) in Paradise like it.

The Book of Zuhd and Softening of Hearts - Sahih Muslim 533 d

I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who builds a mosque for Allah, Allah would build for him (a house) in Paradise like it.

Commentary on the Hadith

This noble hadith from Sahih Muslim reveals the immense reward for those who contribute to building mosques for the sake of Allah alone. The Prophet (ﷺ) informs us that whoever constructs a mosque seeking Allah's pleasure, Allah will construct for him a similar dwelling in Paradise.

Scholars explain that "like it" refers to similarity in splendor, beauty, and excellence, not necessarily identical physical structure, for the houses of Paradise far surpass anything in this world. The reward corresponds to the intention - if one builds for show or reputation, the reward is lost.

This includes both those who build entire mosques and those who contribute to their construction, according to their capacity. The hadith encourages Muslims to participate in this noble deed, which facilitates worship and brings communities together in remembrance of Allah.

Spiritual Benefits

Building mosques is among the most enduring righteous deeds (sadaqah jariyah), continuing to benefit the builder even after death through the prayers and worship performed therein.

This act demonstrates love for Allah and His worship, purifies wealth, and strengthens the Muslim community. It reflects true zuhd (asceticism) by investing in the eternal hereafter rather than temporary worldly possessions.
