The Book of the Adhan (The Call to Prayer)

Ahmad ibn 'Amr ibn al-Sarh reported to us. He said: Ibn Wahb informed us. He said: Ibn Abi Dhi'b, Yunus, and 'Amr ibn al-Harith informed me that Ibn Shihab told them, from 'Urwah, from 'A'ishah, who said: Between finishing the 'Isha' prayer and dawn, the Prophet (ﷺ) would pray eleven rak'ahs, ending with the taslim after every two rak'ahs and performing Witr with one. He would remain in prostration for as long as one of you takes to recite fifty verses, then raise his head. When the caller had finished the Fajr call and dawn had become clear, he would pray two brief rak'ahs, then lie on his right side until the caller came to him with the iqamah, and he would go out with him. Some transmitters add details to others in this report.

Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abd al-Hakam reported to us, from Shu'ayb, from al-Layth, who said: Khalid narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Hilal, from Makhramah ibn Sulayman, that Kuraib, the freedman of Ibn 'Abbas, informed him: I asked Ibn 'Abbas, 'How did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) pray at night?' He described that he prayed eleven rak'ahs including Witr, then slept deeply. I heard his breathing, and Bilal came to him and said, 'The prayer, Messenger of Allah!' He got up, prayed two rak'ahs, and led the people in prayer without performing ablution.

Al-Husayn ibn Hurayth reported to us. He said: Al-Fadl ibn Musa narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from 'Abd Allah ibn Abi Qatadah, from his father, who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, 'When the iqamah for prayer is called, do not stand until you see me come out.'
