حَدَّثَنَا قُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، وَأَحَمْدُ بْنُ عَبْدَةَ هُوَ الضَّبِّيُّ، وَالْمَعْنَى وَاحِدٌ، قَالا: حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، عَنْ سَلْمٍ الْعَلَوِيِّ، عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم، أَنَّهُ كَانَ عِنْدَهُ رَجُلٌ بِهِ أَثَرُ صُفْرَةٍ، قَالَ: وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم، لا يكَادُ يُواجِهُ أَحَدًا بِشَيْءٍ يَكْرَهُهُ، فَلَمَّا قَامَ، قَالَ لِلْقَوْمِ: لَوْ قُلْتُمْ لَهُ يَدَعُ هَذِهِ الصُّفْرَةَ.

Qutaybah ibn Sa‘id and Ahmad ibn ‘Abdah—who is al-Dabbi—both said: Hammad ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Salm al-‘Alawi, from Anas ibn Malik, from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), that a man with a trace of saffron on him was in his presence. The Messenger of Allah would scarcely confront anyone directly about something he disliked. When the man stood up, he said to the people, “If only you would tell him to leave off this saffron.”
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic names two transmitters and says “the meaning is one”; both report the same account through Hammad ibn Zayd. The complete chain is included.
The Arabic says the man stood up (when he rose), rather than explicitly saying he left, as in the English witness. It describes the Prophet as hardly confronting anyone directly with something he disliked.
