حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْمُنْكَدِرِ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَتِ: اسْتَأْذَنَ رَجُلٌ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم، وَأَنَا عِنْدَهُ، فَقَالَ: بِئْسَ ابْنُ الْعَشِيرَةِ أَوْ أَخُو الْعَشِيرَةِ، ثُمَّ أَذِنَ لَهُ، فَأَلانَ لَهُ الْقَوْلَ، فَلَمَّا خَرَجَ، قُلْتُ: يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ، قُلْتَ مَا قُلْتَ ثُمَّ أَلَنْتَ لَهُ الْقَوْلَ؟ فَقَالَ: يَا عَائِشَةُ، إِنَّ مِنْ شَرِّ النَّاسِ مَنْ تَرَكَهُ النَّاسُ أَوْ وَدَعَهُ النَّاسُ اتِّقَاءَ فُحْشِهِ.

Ibn Abi ‘Umar narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn al-Munkadir, from ‘Urwah, from ‘A’ishah, who said: A man asked permission to enter upon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) while I was with him. He said, “What an evil son of the clan—or brother of the clan—he is!” Then he gave the man permission to enter and spoke gently to him. When the man left, I said, “Messenger of Allah, you said what you said, then you spoke gently to him?” He said, “‘A’ishah, among the worst of people is one whom people leave alone or shun for fear of his foul speech.”

The Arabic preserves an alternative in the initial description, “son of the clan or brother of the clan.” The closing statement says people leave or shun someone because they fear his foulness/obscenity; the witness paraphrases this as his ill manners.
