Mahmud ibn Ghilan narrated to us; he said: Waki‘ narrated to us; he said: Mis‘ar narrated to us, from Abu Sakhrah Jami‘ ibn Shaddad, from al-Mughirah ibn ‘Abd Allah, from al-Mughirah ibn Shu‘bah, who said: I was a guest with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, one night. A roasted side of meat was brought, then he took the knife and began cutting; he cut some of it for me with it. He said: Bilal came to call him to prayer, so he put down the knife and said, ‘What is the matter with him? May his hands be in the dust!’ He said: His moustache had grown long. He said to him, ‘Shall I trim it for you using a tooth-stick as a measure, or should you trim it using a tooth-stick as a measure?’

Notes and open questions — unreviewed

The expression ما له تربت يداه is idiomatic and its force is not transparent from the wording; the English witness gives a literalized rendering. The referent of ‘him’ is also not explicit in this sentence.

What idiomatic force and referent are intended in this wording?

The Arabic says that his moustache had grown full/long, but does not explicitly say it hung down close to his mouth.

Should the witness's added physical detail be treated as interpretive expansion?
