Translation
It is also reported from Abu Huraira, may Allah be well pleased with him that

Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) used to stand performing the ritual prayer until his feet had begun to swell, so he would be asked: “O Messenger of Allah, must you do this, when Allah has already forgiven you your former and your latter sins?” He replied: “Shall I not be a thankful servant?”

The Excellence of Night Vigil Prayer

This narration from Ash-Shama'il Al-Muhammadiyah 262 demonstrates the Prophet's exceptional devotion despite his guaranteed forgiveness. The swelling of his blessed feet indicates prolonged standing in prayer, particularly during the night vigil (Tahajjud).

The Station of Gratitude

The Prophet's response "Shall I not be a thankful servant?" reveals that worship is not merely for sin expiation but for expressing gratitude to the Benefactor. True thankfulness (shukr) manifests through increased obedience and devotion.

Scholars explain that the Prophet's gratitude was proportional to the blessings received - the greatest being divine guidance and prophethood. His continuous worship exemplified the highest form of thankfulness.

Legal and Spiritual Implications

This hadith establishes the recommended nature of night prayers while clarifying they remain voluntary. The companions' question shows their concern for the Prophet's comfort, while his answer teaches that spiritual stations are earned through consistent action.

Imam Al-Ghazali notes in Ihya that this narration inspires believers to exceed obligatory worship, recognizing that spiritual perfection lies in voluntary devotion that expresses love and gratitude.
