Muhammad ibn al-Muthanna narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Ja‘far narrated to us: Shu‘bah narrated to us, from Abu Ishaq, who said: I heard ‘Asim ibn Damrah say: We asked ‘Ali about the Messenger of Allah’s prayer during the daytime, and he said, “You would not be able to do that.” We said, “Whoever among us is able to do it will pray.” He said: When the sun was [in this position] like it is [in that position] at the time of the ‘Asr prayer, he would pray two rak‘ahs. When the sun was [in this position], like it is [in that position] at the time of Zuhr, he would pray four. He would pray four before Zuhr, two after it, and four before ‘Asr. He would separate each pair of rak‘ahs by offering the salutation of peace upon the angels brought near, the prophets, and those of the believers and Muslims who follow them.

The Arabic transmission chain is included in full; the English witness starts with ‘Asim ibn Damrah’s statement and omits the chain.
The witness inserts explicit eastward and westward directions for the deictic phrases “from here” and “from there.” Those directions are not stated in the Arabic, so they are not supplied here.
The source says “the angels brought near” (al-mala’ikah al-muqarrabin), “the prophets,” and “those who follow them of the believers and Muslims”; these details are retained.
