‘Abd Allah ibn Buraydah reported: I heard my father, Buraydah, say: The Prophet was walking when a man came to him with a donkey and said, ‘Messenger of Allah, ride.’ The man then moved toward the back. The Messenger of Allah said, ‘You have greater right to the front of your mount, unless you give it to me.’ He replied, ‘I give it to you.’ So the Prophet rode.

Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan gharib hadith through this route. There is also a report on this topic from Qays ibn Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubadah.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The man yields the place at the front of the mount to the Prophet; the hadith first acknowledges the owner’s greater right to it unless he gives it away.
