Bahz ibn Hakim reported from his father, from his grandfather: I asked, ‘Prophet of Allah, what should we cover of our private parts, and what may we leave uncovered?’ He said, ‘Guard your private parts except from your wife or those whom your right hand possesses.’ I asked, ‘What if people are among one another?’ He said, ‘If you can keep anyone from seeing them, then do not let them be seen.’ I asked, ‘What if one of us is alone?’ He said, ‘Allah is more deserving than people that one should feel modesty before Him.’

Abu ‘Isa said: This is a hasan hadith.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • This is a variant of the previous report. It explicitly adds the case of people being among one another and stresses privacy if possible; the final phrase compares modesty before Allah with modesty before people.
