Shu‘bah and al-Thawri also narrated from Abu Ishaq, from al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib, who said: ‘I saw the Prophet wearing a red hullah.’ Mahmoud ibn Ghaylan reported this to us through Waki‘, from Sufyan, from Abu Ishaq; Muhammad ibn Bashshar also reported it through Muhammad ibn Ja‘far, from Shu‘bah, from Abu Ishaq, likewise. There is more discussion of the hadith than this. I asked Muhammad whether Abu Ishaq’s report from al-Bara’ or the report from Jabir ibn Samurah was more authentic; he considered both hadiths authentic. There are reports on this topic from al-Bara’ and Abu Juhaifah.
