حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ حُجْرٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا شَرِيكٌ، عَنِ الْمِقْدَامِ بْنِ شُرَيْحٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، قَالَ قِيلَ لَهَا هَلْ كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَتَمَثَّلُ بِشَيْءٍ مِنَ الشِّعْرِ قَالَتْ كَانَ يَتَمَثَّلُ بِشِعْرِ ابْنِ رَوَاحَةَ وَيَتَمَثَّلُ وَيَقُولُ " وَيَأْتِيكَ بِالأَخْبَارِ مَنْ لَمْ تُزَوِّدِ " . وَفِي الْبَابِ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ . قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ .

‘A’ishah was asked whether the Prophet would recite any poetry. She said, ‘He would quote verses by Ibn Rawahah, including: “News will come to you from someone you gave no provisions to.”’ A report from Ibn ‘Abbas is also cited on this topic. Abu ‘Isa graded this hadith hasan sahih.

The Arabic phrase yatamaththalu means to quote or recite lines of poetry; the saying is from Ibn Rawahah, not presented as the Prophet’s own composition.
