حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ، أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ، عَنْ يُونُسَ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم " لأَنْ يَمْتَلِئَ جَوْفُ أَحَدِكُمْ قَيْحًا خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَمْتَلِئَ شِعْرًا " . قَالَ هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ .

Muhammad ibn Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas reported from his father that the Messenger of Allah said, ‘It would be better for one of you to have his insides filled with pus than to have them filled with poetry.’
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
This wording omits the phrase ‘that eats away at him’ found in the preceding Abu Hurayrah narration. Abu ‘Isa graded this hadith hasan sahih.
