Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah said, ‘When you travel through fertile land, let your camels graze their share of it. When you travel during drought, hasten while they still have strength. When you camp for the night, keep away from the road, for it is a path for animals and a nighttime refuge for vermin.’ Reports from Jabir and Anas are also cited on this topic. Abu ‘Isa graded this hadith hasan sahih.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic contrasts fertile ground (al-khisb) with drought or barren conditions (al-sanah); niqiy refers to the camels’ strength or vigor. Hawamm are crawling or poisonous creatures, not necessarily only ‘poisonous vermin’ as in the English witness.
