Muhammad ibn Marzuq al-Basri narrated to us: ‘Ubayd ibn Waqid narrated to us, from Zarbiy, who said: I heard Anas ibn Malik say: An elderly man came seeking the Prophet ﷺ, but the people were slow to make room for him. The Prophet ﷺ said: “He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young and honor our elders.”
There are also reports on this topic from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr, Abu Hurayrah, Ibn ‘Abbas, and Abu Umamah. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is gharib. Zarbiy has reports from Anas ibn Malik and others that are munkar (rejected).
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The narrator criticism is rendered using the technical term munkar with a brief gloss; it describes reports attributed to Zarbiy, not a verdict in the wording of the hadith itself.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَرْزُوقٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ،
The English witness omits the Arabic chain before Anas ibn Malik.
Should the complete chain be kept in the English text?
وَزَرْبِيٌّ لَهُ أَحَادِيثُ مَنَاكِيرُ عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ وَغَيْرِهِ .
The compiler says Zarbiy has munkar reports from Anas and others; the English witness omits this criticism.
Should the technical criticism be retained with a concise gloss?
قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ غَرِيبٌ .
The report is classified gharib in Arabic, absent from the witness.
Should the compiler’s classification be retained?
