Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Aban narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Fudayl narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, from ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young and recognize the honor of our elders.”

Hannad narrated to us: ‘Abdah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, with a similar report, except that he said, “and recognize the rights of our elders.”

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The source preserves two routes and a wording variant: honor (sharaf) in the first and rights (haqq) in the second.

  • حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ،

The English witness omits the opening transmitters and the second transmission route entirely.

Should both routes be retained in the English translation?

  • نَحْوَهُ إِلاَّ أَنَّهُ قَالَ ‏"‏ وَيَعْرِفْ حَقَّ كَبِيرِنَا ‏"‏ ‏.

The second route differs by saying ‘the rights of our elders’ instead of ‘the honor of our elders’.

Should this lexical variant be kept as a distinct reading?
