Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Aban narrated to us: Yazid ibn Harun narrated to us, from Sharik, from Layth, from ‘Ikrimah, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “He is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young, honor our elders, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong.”

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib. The report of Muhammad ibn Ishaq from ‘Amr ibn Shu‘ayb is hasan sahih, and it has also been narrated from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr by another route.

Some scholars said that the Prophet’s statement, “He is not one of us,” means “he does not follow our way” or “our proper conduct.” ‘Ali ibn al-Madini said that Yahya ibn Sa‘id reported Sufyan al-Thawri as rejecting this explanation; rather, “he is not one of us” means “he is not like us.”

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The compiler records a disputed explanation of the phrase ‘not one of us’: some interpret it as not following the community’s way or proper conduct, while Sufyan al-Thawri is reported to reject that interpretation.

  • حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ،

The witness omits the transmitters in the Arabic chain.

Should the full isnad be included in the translated record?

  • ‏ - قَالَ بَعْضُ أَهْلِ الْعِلْمِ مَعْنَى قَوْلِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ لَيْسَ مِنَّا ‏"‏ ‏.

Some scholars explain ‘not one of us’ as not following the community’s sunnah or adab, while Sufyan al-Thawri is reported to reject this explanation in the next sentence.

Should both interpretations be preserved as a disputed commentary?

  • ‏ وَقَالَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْمَدِينِيِّ قَالَ يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ كَانَ سُفْيَانُ الثَّوْرِيُّ يُنْكِرُ هَذَا التَّفْسِيرَ لَيْسَ مِنَّا يَقُولُ لَيْسَ مِثْلَنَا ‏.

‘Ali ibn al-Madini attributes to Yahya ibn Sa‘id a report that Sufyan al-Thawri rejected the preceding interpretation and took the phrase to mean ‘not like us’.

Can the nested attribution and the reading ‘not like us’ be checked against the source edition?
