Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.
Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Abu Dawud narrated to us: Shu‘bah informed us, saying: Mansur wrote this to me, and I read it back to him. He heard Abu ‘Uthman, the freedman of al-Mughirah ibn Shu‘bah, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: I heard Abu al-Qasim ﷺ say: “Mercy is not removed except from a wretched person.”
The name of Abu ‘Uthman, who narrated from Abu Hurayrah, is unknown. It is said that he was the father of Musa ibn Abi ‘Uthman, from whom Abu al-Zinad narrated. Abu al-Zinad narrated several reports from Musa ibn Abi ‘Uthman, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet ﷺ. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
Abu al-Qasim is a kunya of the Prophet ﷺ in this report. The chain’s pronouns around Mansur’s written transmission are not explicit in the source; the translation follows the sequence without adding a narrator identity beyond the grammatical context.
The Arabic compresses the written transmission from Mansur, the reading back to him, and the link to Abu ‘Uthman without repeating each subject explicitly.
Can the exact attribution of ‘hearing’ Abu ‘Uthman be verified from the source edition?
Abu ‘Uthman’s name is unknown; the text only says it is reported that he was Musa ibn Abi ‘Uthman’s father.
Should the tentative identification remain explicitly marked as uncertain?
قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ .
The witness omits Abu ‘Isa’s hasan grading.
Should the grading be retained in the English translation?
