حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ أَبِي قَابُوسَ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ الرَّاحِمُونَ يَرْحَمُهُمُ الرَّحْمَنُ ارْحَمُوا مَنْ فِي الأَرْضِ يَرْحَمْكُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ الرَّحِمُ شُجْنَةٌ مِنَ الرَّحْمَنِ فَمَنْ وَصَلَهَا وَصَلَهُ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ قَطَعَهَا قَطَعَهُ اللَّهُ ‏" ‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.‏

Ibn Abi ‘Umar narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from ‘Amr ibn Dinar, from Abu Qabus, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Amr, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Those who show mercy will be shown mercy by the Most Merciful. Show mercy to those on earth, and the One above the heavens will show mercy to you. The ties of kinship are a branch of the Most Merciful: whoever maintains them, Allah will maintain ties with him, and whoever severs them, Allah will sever ties with him.”

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed

  • The Arabic describes kinship as a branch or connection from al-Rahman; the wordplay with the name of the Most Merciful is preserved. The phrase ‘the One above the heavens’ follows the Arabic wording without adding interpretation.

  • حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ،

    The English witness omits the transmitters in the isnad.

    Should the full transmission chain be included?

  • قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏ "‏ الرَّاحِمُونَ يَرْحَمُهُمُ الرَّحْمَنُ ارْحَمُوا مَنْ فِي الأَرْضِ يَرْحَمْكُمْ مَنْ فِي السَّمَاءِ الرَّحِمُ شُجْنَةٌ مِنَ الرَّحْمَنِ فَمَنْ وَصَلَهَا وَصَلَهُ اللَّهُ وَمَنْ قَطَعَهَا قَطَعَهُ اللَّهُ ‏" ‏ ‏.

    The Arabic calls kinship a shujnah from al-Rahman, a branch or connection, preserving wordplay with the divine name.

    Should ‘branch of the Most Merciful’ remain the literal metaphor, or should an explanatory note accompany it?
