Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Safwan ibn ‘Isa narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn ‘Ajlan, from al-Qa‘qa‘ ibn Hakim, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Religion is sincere counsel.” He repeated it three times. They asked: “To whom, O Messenger of Allah?” He said: “To Allah, His Book, the leaders of the Muslims, and the Muslims generally.”
Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. There are also reports on this topic from Ibn ‘Umar, Tamim al-Dari, Jarir, Hakim ibn Abi Yazid from his father, and Thawban.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
Nasihah is translated as ‘sincere counsel’; ‘the Muslims generally’ renders ‘ammatihim, the wider Muslim community, avoiding the witness’s misleading ‘average people’.
قَالُوا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ لِمَنْ قَالَ " لِلَّهِ وَلِكِتَابِهِ وَلأَئِمَّةِ الْمُسْلِمِينَ وَعَامَّتِهِمْ " .
The Arabic says ‘the leaders of the Muslims and their general body’; the witness renders the latter as ‘average people’, which is misleading.
Should ‘the Muslims generally’ be retained for ‘ammatihim?
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بَشَّارٍ،
The witness omits the Arabic transmission chain.
Should the complete isnad be included in the English block?
قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ .
The hasan sahih grade and related reports are omitted from the English witness.
Should the grading and corroborating narrators be retained?
