‘Ubayd ibn Asbat ibn Muhammad al-Qurashi narrated to us: My father narrated to me, from Hisham ibn Sa‘d, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A Muslim is the brother of a Muslim: he does not betray him, lie to him, or abandon him. Everything belonging to a Muslim is inviolable for another Muslim: his honor, his property, and his blood. God-consciousness is here. It is enough evil for a person to despise his Muslim brother.”
Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan gharib. There are also reports on this topic from ‘Ali and Abu Ayyub.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic verb يخذله means to abandon or fail to support him, rather than simply deceive him. The source says ‘God-consciousness is here’ but does not describe a gesture in this passage.
The third verb لا يخذله means not abandoning or failing to support him; the witness renders it as ‘deceive’, which overlaps the first prohibition.
Should the third clause be rendered as ‘does not abandon him’ to preserve the three distinct prohibitions?
The witness omits the Arabic transmission chain.
Should the full chain be retained in the English record?
The Arabic includes a hasan gharib grade and two related reports absent from the witness.
Should the compiler’s grade and related reports be kept?
