Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.
Ibn Abi ‘Umar narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us: al-Zuhri narrated to us. (A change of route.) Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from ‘Ata’ ibn Yazid al-Laythi, from Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “It is not lawful for a Muslim to shun his brother for more than three days. When they meet, each turns away from the other. The better of the two is the one who initiates the greeting of peace.”
There are also reports on this topic from ‘Abd Allah ibn Mas‘ud, Anas, Abu Hurayrah, Hisham ibn ‘Amir, and Abu Hind al-Dari. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The Arabic chain has the route-transfer marker ح between two transmission paths; the translation preserves it as a route change. The witness’s ‘face to face’ appears to be a typo for ‘face to face’ meeting, expressed simply as ‘when they meet’.
The Arabic has a route-transfer marker after the first path reaches al-Zuhri, then starts a second path through Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman which continues to the report.
Should the first chain fragment be retained as a separate route in this form?
The witness phrase ‘they come fare to fare’ is awkward; the Arabic simply says they meet and each turns away.
Should this be rendered as ‘when they meet, each turns away from the other’?
The witness omits the related reports from five other narrators and the hasan sahih grade.
Should the related-report list and grade be included?
