Ahmad ibn Mani‘ narrated to us: Isma‘il ibn Ibrahim narrated to us: Humayd narrated to us, from Anas, who said: When ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Awf arrived in Madinah, the Prophet ﷺ established a bond of brotherhood between him and Sa‘d ibn al-Rabi‘. Sa‘d said to him: “Come, I will divide my wealth with you equally. I have two wives, so I will divorce one of them; when her waiting period is over, you may marry her.” ‘Abd al-Rahman replied: “May Allah bless your family and your wealth. Show me where the market is.” They showed him the market. That day he returned with nothing but some dried curds and ghee, which he had earned as a profit. Later the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw traces of yellow on him and said: “What is this?” He replied: “I have married a woman from the Ansar.” The Prophet ﷺ asked: “What dowry did you give her?” He replied: “A date-stone’s weight.” Humayd said: “Or he said, a date-stone’s weight in gold.” The Prophet ﷺ said: “Hold a wedding feast, even if with only a sheep.”

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. Ahmad ibn Hanbal said that a date-stone’s weight in gold is three and one-third dirhams. Ishaq ibn Ibrahim said it is five dirhams. I heard Ishaq ibn Mansur relate this from both of them.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The report preserves Humayd’s uncertainty about whether the dowry was stated as a date-stone’s weight or specifically that weight in gold. Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ishaq ibn Ibrahim give different weights; both are retained as attributed opinions. Aqit is rendered as dried curds.

  • ‏ قَالَ حُمَيْدٌ أَوْ قَالَ وَزْنَ نَوَاةٍ مِنْ ذَهَبٍ ‏.

Humayd gives an alternative wording: simply ‘a date-stone’, or ‘the weight of a date-stone in gold’; Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ishaq ibn Ibrahim then give different dirham values.

Should all these distinct formulations and attributed weight estimates be retained?

  • حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ،

The witness omits the full isnad preceding Anas.

Should the transmission chain be included in the English record?

Ahmad ibn Hanbal and Ishaq ibn Ibrahim differ on the dirham weight represented by a date-stone of gold.

Can the unit estimates be confirmed against the source edition?
