Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

‘Abd al-Jabbar ibn al-‘Ala’ al-‘Attar and Sa‘id ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman narrated to us. They said: Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from Anas, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not sever ties with one another, turn your backs on one another, hate one another, or envy one another. Be, servants of Allah, brothers. It is not lawful for a Muslim to shun his brother for more than three days.”

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. There are also reports on this topic from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, al-Zubayr ibn al-‘Awwam, Ibn Mas‘ud, and Abu Hurayrah.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic distinguishes severing relations, turning away, hatred, and envy as four separate prohibitions.

The source separately prohibits severing relations, turning away, hatred, and envy before commanding brotherhood.

Should the four prohibitions remain distinct in the English wording?

The English witness omits the Arabic transmitters before Anas.

Should the chain be preserved in the translated record?

The Arabic gives a hasan sahih grade and lists four additional related narrators, all omitted from the witness.

Should these compiler notes be included?
