Ahmad ibn Mani‘ narrated to us: Isma‘il ibn Ibrahim narrated to us, from Ma‘mar, from al-Zuhri, from Humayd ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, from his mother, Umm Kulthum bint ‘Uqbah, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: “The one who reconciles people is not a liar when he says something good or conveys something good.”

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The verb نمى conveys passing along or reporting something; the wording is kept broad as ‘conveys something good’ within the context of reconciliation.

  • حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ،

The witness omits the chain from Ahmad ibn Mani‘ through Umm Kulthum bint ‘Uqbah.

Should the full isnad be retained in the English translation?

  • قَالَتْ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ ‏ "‏ لَيْسَ بِالْكَاذِبِ مَنْ أَصْلَحَ بَيْنَ النَّاسِ فَقَالَ خَيْرًا أَوْ نَمَى خَيْرًا ‏" ‏ ‏.

The source says the reconciler may say or convey something good; ‘conveys’ reflects the second verb’s sense of passing something along.

Should the broader phrase ‘conveys something good’ be retained?

  • ‏ قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ ‏.

The hadith’s hasan sahih grade is absent from the witness.

Should the compiler’s grade be included?
