Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.
Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us. (A change of route.) Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Bishr ibn al-Sari narrated to us, and Abu Ahmad also narrated to us; both said: Sufyan narrated to us, from ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Uthman ibn Khuthaym, from Shahr ibn Hawshab, from Asma’ bint Yazid, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Lying is not lawful except in three cases: a man speaking to his wife to please her, lying in war, and lying to reconcile people.” Mahmud’s version says: “Lying is not appropriate except in three cases.”
Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan. We know it from Asma’ only through the narration of Ibn Khuthaym. Dawud ibn Abi Hind also narrated this hadith from Shahr ibn Hawshab, from the Prophet ﷺ, without mentioning Asma’. Muhammad ibn al-‘Ala’, Abu Kurayb, narrated this to us: Ibn Abi Za’idah narrated to us, from Dawud ibn Abi Hind. There is also a report on this topic from Abu Bakr.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source gives two phrasings in the main route: ‘not lawful’ and, in Mahmud’s version, ‘not appropriate’. It also records another route from Shahr ibn Hawshab that omits Asma’ bint Yazid.
ح قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ غَيْلاَنَ،
The chain switches routes at the marker ح; Mahmud and Bishr’s route then converges with Abu Ahmad at Sufyan.
Should this shared route structure be displayed as two branches in the edition?
وَقَالَ مَحْمُودٌ فِي حَدِيثِهِ " لاَ يَصْلُحُ الْكَذِبُ إِلاَّ فِي ثَلاَثٍ " .
Mahmud’s wording changes ‘not lawful’ to ‘not appropriate’ while keeping the same three exceptions.
Should the variant be preserved as a distinct wording?
عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ فِيهِ عَنْ أَسْمَاءَ .
Dawud ibn Abi Hind’s route from Shahr ibn Hawshab omits Asma’ bint Yazid, unlike the main route.
Should this route difference remain explicit in the translated record?
