Muhammad ibn Bashshar narrated to us: ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from Wasil, from al-Ma‘rur ibn Suwayd, from Abu Dharr, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “They are your brothers whom Allah has placed under your authority. Whoever has his brother under his authority should feed him from what he eats and clothe him from what he wears. He must not burden him with work beyond his capacity; and if he does burden him, he should help him with it.”

There are also reports on this topic from ‘Ali, Umm Salamah, Ibn ‘Umar, and Abu Hurayrah. Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic describes people under one’s authority as brothers and requires food, clothing, limits on work, and assistance if overburdened. The English uses ‘under your authority’ to convey the historical relation without obscuring the wording’s humane obligations.

The Arabic refers to brothers placed under one’s authority, in a historical context of servitude; the translation uses ‘under your authority’ while preserving the brotherhood address.

Should the wording retain ‘servants’ or use ‘those under your authority’ for

The witness omits the Arabic chain preceding Abu Dharr.

Should the full isnad be retained?

The Arabic lists four related reports and gives a hasan sahih grade, omitted from the witness.

Should these closing notes be included?
