Ahmad ibn Muhammad informed us: ‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak informed us, from Fudayl ibn Ghazwan, from Ibn Abi Nu‘m, from Abu Hurayrah, who said: Abu al-Qasim ﷺ, the Prophet of Repentance, said: “Whoever accuses a person under his authority, when that person is innocent of the accusation, will have the prescribed penalty carried out against him on the Day of Resurrection—unless the accusation is true.”
Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. Ibn Abi Nu‘m is ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Nu‘m al-Bajali, whose kunya is Abu al-Hakam. There are also reports on this topic from Suwayd ibn Muqarrin and ‘Abd Allah ibn ‘Umar.
Notes and open questions — unreviewed
The source uses the verb qadhafa, which commonly denotes a serious false accusation, often specifically an accusation of illicit sexual conduct. The wording ‘prescribed penalty’ is retained without adding a specific legal procedure not stated in this text.
The Arabic uses qadhafa, conventionally a grave accusation and often specifically an accusation of illicit sexual conduct; it does not spell out that specific allegation in this sentence.
Should the English text specify sexual accusation in a note or retain the broader ‘accuses’?
The English witness omits the Arabic chain and all compiler end matter.
Should the complete chain, narrator identification, and related reports be retained?
The report conditions the penalty on the accused being innocent and excepts a true accusation.
Should the conditional exception remain explicit in the translation?
