Translation

Unreviewed translation. All hadiths in this collection are available in five languages. Titles and introductions may remain in Arabic.

Mahmud ibn Ghaylan narrated to us: Mu’ammal narrated to us: Sufyan narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from Ibrahim al-Taymi, from his father, from Abu Mas‘ud al-Ansari, who said: I was beating a person under my authority when I heard someone behind me say: “Know, Abu Mas‘ud! Know!” I turned around, and there was the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He said: “Allah has greater power over you than you have over him.” Abu Mas‘ud said: “After that, I never beat anyone under my authority again.”

Abu ‘Isa said: This hadith is hasan sahih. Ibrahim al-Taymi is Ibrahim ibn Yazid ibn Sharik.

Notes and open questions — unreviewed
  • The Arabic uses mamluk for the person under Abu Mas‘ud’s authority; the translation preserves the historical relation without softening the act of beating. The compiler identifies Ibrahim al-Taymi by his full name.

The English witness omits the transmission chain preceding Abu Mas‘ud al-Ansari.

Should the full chain be included in the English record?

The Prophet’s statement contrasts Allah’s power over Abu Mas‘ud with Abu Mas‘ud’s power over the person under his authority.

Should this contrast remain worded as ‘Allah has greater power over you than you have over him’?

The compiler identifies Ibrahim al-Taymi as Ibrahim ibn Yazid ibn Sharik, omitted from the witness.

Should the full narrator name remain in the translated block?
